Macau Useful Bits

Hong Kong - To and From
- Don’t forget that if you’re travelling in packs you can get a group discount on your airport express tickets.  A group ticket for four people sets you back just HKD250.
- Qantas lets you check in one day in advance.  If you feel like doing some last minute shopping head over to the Airport Express station in HK, check your luggage in and then wander around until it’s time to go.
- FREE wireless provided by PCCW throughout HKIA

Taxis - Below are numbers for the taxi despatch centres.  When they pick up just say “Taxi please.”  Someone that “speaks” English will ask for your location then you’ll be put on hold (”Home on the range” is used by 5000000) while they try and source a driver.  They basically call out your location over the radio until a driver responds to pick up the job.  They will come back and give you the taxi number, which is the number plate of the taxi.  If you’re unlucky they’ll come back with “Sorry, No taxi now.”, which means try again in a few minutes.  Going on my own personal experience, roughly 5% of taxi drivers understand English.  You need to have your destination written in chinese to show the driver, or else you need to be able to say the name in chinese.  Cantonese has at least 6 tones - If you’re relying on saying the name make sure you have at least a vague approximation of the pronunciation.  If you don’t, you could be asking him to wash vegetables in the tiger drinking stones.

Shopping
Green Door - Open from 10:40am to 7pm.  Sells all manner of brand name clothing, except unlike Zhuhai these items are legitimate.  There’s a lot of RL, RL Polo, Boss, DKNY, Nautica etc.  Located on Trav. Praia Grande, it’s No 2 and literally has a green door.  I will add some pictures and a map soon so that you can copy it down before you venture there.
In the meantime find your way to China Plaza (Zhong Hua), located on the corner of Ave. da Praia Grande and Ave. de D Joao IV.  Walk down Ave de DJ IV keeping China Plaza on your right until you come to a side street which has a shop named Atlantis Crystal. Turn right and walk down about 5m.  Green door is on the right hand side, right next to Hotel Nam Tim.  It may look dodgy but just head in and up the stairs to the second floor.  In front of you will be the “Garment Shop”, go crazy.

New Yao Han -

Eating
Red Spot Cafe - http://www.redspotcafe.com - Run by an Australian.  Good food, Pizza cheaper than Pizza Hut, yes I know - everyone is cheaper than Pizza Hut.  They do stuffed crusts.  But not just pizza, they do all kinds of western food so it’s great when you have a craving for something non-Asian.  They also deliver, a minimum order applies and a 5% surcharge in Taipa and 10% to Macau or Coloane i think.  You can get all this info from the website. The ph. is 2882 2977.  Garry will deliver your food to your door.
